Spearfish Canyon 76 Trail

76 Trail

RATING: Difficult

Ready to be on top of the world? The 76 Trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of Spearfish Canyon. Located right across from the Spearfish Canyon Lodge parking lot, the 76 Trail is a short yet steep hike (1.2-miles each direction) that leads you to the rim of gorgeous Spearfish Canyon. While the climb can be a challenge, the views at the end are well worth the effort.

At one time, this trail was part of the 16-mile historic mining trail that ran through Spearfish Canyon. Potato Creek Johnny, famous for finding an enormous gold nugget during the Goldrush, was said to have frequented this Black Hills trail.

Roughlock Falls - Spearfish Canyon

Roughlock Falls

RATING: Easiest

Often considered one of the most gorgeous destinations in the Black Hills, Roughlock Falls is a dream setting for visitors and locals alike. Fed by Little Spearfish Creek, the creek plunges down a deep chasm creating a jaw-dropping multi-tiered waterfall.

The trailhead for Roughlock Falls is just a short walk from Spearfish Canyon Lodge. Multiple walking paths, trails, and catwalks are available for exploring the canyon, taking in the sights, and marveling at the falls. The main trail (roughly 2 miles in and out) is handicap-accessible so everyone in the family can enjoy this beauty.

Spearfish Falls

Spearfish Falls

Rating: Moderate

This amazing 47-foot waterfall is located directly behind the Latchstring Restaurant and is one of the most popular stops in the Spearfish Canyon Nature area. While looking up at the waterfall you can see some of the parts that were left behind from when the Burlington Railroad took passengers directly above in the 19th century.

The path to Spearfish Falls is a short walk from the Latchstring Restaurant parking lot (roughly 1.5 miles round trip) and is considered a moderate trail. As you ascend down the path you will be immersed in lush greenery, with benches along the way where you can sit and enjoy the views. The large wooden platform at the base of the waterfall offers the perfect spot to get an up-close view of this magical waterfall.
