Getaway – Snow or No!

We’re so excited that it’s going to be a white Christmas here at the Lodge and Latchstring. There’s nothing more beautiful than piles of undisturbed white snow (until the snowballs fights start). Two feet of beautiful snow just fell here in the canyon and there is more snow in our forecast! While the snowmobile trails are still rated fair to poor until we get a little more powder there’s so much more to do this time of year.

Our Sports Center rents snowshoes to take advantage of the gorgeous hikes in Spearfish Canyon. Some sturdy snowboots will get you up the trail to Roughlock Falls and Spearfish Falls and our more adventurous hikers trek straight up the 76 Trail to Buzzards Roost for an overlook of the canyon.

Of course we also still fish in the winter; as Spearfish Creek freezes from the bottom up it’s not even ice fishing! Just grab a fly rod from the Sports Center and take a day to admire the creek! It’s a hop, skip, and a little jump up to Terry Peak or Mystic Mountain for some local skiing in the Hills.

The Lodge is 13 miles from Spearfish and 17 miles to Deadwood. This is a great time to take advantage of everything that’s happening around us during the day and then come back to a little slice of heaven to relax. A little getaway can be a great thing for your mental health! For instance, I’m taking a little time this weekend to check out of regular life and check into an independent hotel for some relaxation and to see the new Star Wars movie in IMAX! That’s right – the new Star Wars movie is coming. May the force be with all cinema workers this weekend.

Spearfish is a great place to do some holiday shopping; with our amazing Main Street lined with locally owned small businesses you’re sure to find something unique for everyone on your list. And who doesn’t want to come back to a hot tub steaming in the snow after a hard day of credit card usage? Or check out the live nativity hosted by the Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary with some hot chocolate and cookies! Deadwood can be a fun visit day or night. Their museums and attractions like Mount Moriah can fill a whole day and then some and their nightlife is a bustling good time between concerts, gambling, or gathering everyone around a table at the Saloon 10 and reliving Deadwood’s glory days!

So while we love the snow and we’re crossing all our fingers and toes for more to start we just want to remind you that there’s so much more to our area and encourage you to get out and explore!
